Walking slowly. There was silence and for a moment there was a sound from nowhere. She looked around. Trying to fill her courage slowly then a little confidently. Looking far ahead. Jumping haphazardly, moving irregularly, reaching for something and then falling silent.

This performance is both an exploration and a revisit of Flying Balloons Puppet's Pongo Abelli, which was first performed in Helutrans in April 2019 as well as during the 2019 George Town Festival. Pongo then transformed into a video performance during the pandemic titled Unknown Territory. In 2025, he came back within a space where he imagined and experienced, not only as the main subject but part of a complex living space. Pongo becomes one last artifact, with the dystopian space displaying a world with disorder: the space, the subject, whatever is in it.

Pongo Abelii is the journey that we took in 2019, to search and develop our own artistic practice as puppet and performance group. Performed in Helutrans, we created an Orangutan puppet performed by 3 puppeteers, incorporating lighting and dynamic sound design. This performance was also presented in George Town Festival 2019, in Penang, Malaysia.

During the pandemic COVID-19, “Pongo Abelii” transformed into “PONGO” a table top puppet video performance that we shoot in our living room. While Pongo Abelii talked about what Orangutan experiences are, PONGO completed the story with their life and his role in nature as well as how it’s surrounding shifting

“Unknown Territory” is a space that we explored on how a puppet and the performance projected reality and presented circumstances where we are at. How one character transcend and connected to a bigger much complex relations

Unknown Territory is a mirror, reflecting not only Pongo, but us. It began with a question: “Is there a future for us?” Our journey with Pongo started in 2019 with “Pongo Abelii” and has since moved through “Pongo”, “Unknown Territory” (video), and now returns back to the stage. We once carried hope that Pongo’s home, could heal. And yet, the world chose otherwise. Pongo has lost his space: the space to live, to grow, to belong. And it is not only him. Wars, stolen lands; we too are wandering this unknown territory. In 2019, I placed Pongo in front of the mirror and saw only him. Today, I place him there again, and the face that looks back is mine

This performance brings light and sound as breathing bodies, a cold beam carving Pongo’s fragility, dimness revealing delicate details, while darkness holds the questions. We want the audience to be caught in a dialogue between light and shadow, sound and silence. A liminal experience where wounds, memories, and hopes intertwine.

I love the show. It is amazingly crafty. Very organic material, heartbreaking, very deep soul searching concept. Thank you for let us be part of it and able to view the talent, the vision, and actor and the puppetry. It is a learning experience for me as well. Well done
