Synopsis

SOSI: Pieces of Reminiscence portrays the surreal impact of societal and cultural expectations, delving into the genuine difficulties and standards confronted by women in the present day. Originally premiered at the International Puppet Theatre Festival “Pesta Boneka” in Yogyakarta and subsequently refined and restaged at Helateater 2023 Jakarta, and later at Pesta Raya 2023 Esplanade in Singapore, this production explores puppetry made from rattan, used fabric, manipulating objects and actors to convey candid and intimate tale.

This year, SOSI was brought back to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where it was incube and started during the pandemic.

This performance narrates the life of an old woman who is lost in the recesses of her own thoughts and memories. As she tries to find her keys, she uncovers scattered recollections and long-buried aspirations hidden within drawers, recognizing the societal influences that molded her. What are the choices that she would choose if she had the chance? From her upbringing to her occupation and life partner, she reflects on the pressures that guided her decisions.

Sosi is was a voyage I took 2 years ago as a bridge to understand my own experience and women around me about our idea as a human. How societal, cultural, and political state where we live having control over the course of our lives directly and subconsciously. The fact that our reality interconnected within a web-like relationship adds more depth into what I see now as my own definition  of living.

"SOSI: Pieces of Reminiscence" challenges the idea of dualism by investigating the complexity of gender roles, rights and obligations. Dualism creates rigid dichotomies that perpetuate bias and inequality. Framing roles and responsibilities as male or female, society confines individuals within predetermined boxes, limiting the potential to thrive and express oneself authentically.

The performance seeks to take the audience on a journey of exploration into an alternative view of dualism, which offers fluidity and inclusivity in our understanding of human relationships and the structure of society. Re-imagining interactions with multiple perspectives by exploring the past, present and future.

SOSI empowers the threshold space between semiotic and symbolic modalities that are inseparable in the process of signification that constitutes language, and the dialectic between them determines the type of discourse. Refers to a non-verbal, pre-symbolic space that is full of potential and energy but has no fixed form. Articulating a more fluid understanding of the spectrum of identity, making sense of our experiences, the origins of our desires and drives, and forming a holistic awareness of ourselves and our relationships with others.

About Flying Balloons Puppet

Flying Balloons is a dynamic performance group that seamlessly blends the art of puppetry with the exploration of performative performance. Established in Bantul, Yogyakarta by Rangga Dwi Apriadinnur in January 2015, Flying Balloons has evolved to produce over 20 original and collaborative works. Our team, composed of Rangga, Meyda, Anwar, Jefri, and Yunita, collaborates with talented sound designer Youga, Lutvan Hawari, and lighting designer Nano to bring our creations to life. In 2018, Flying Balloons Puppet collaborated with Gwen Knoxx, Australian puppet artist for a performance entitled “Sori in the Land of Lembuna ''. In 2019, the company performed a new piece, “Pongo Abelii '' at Georgetown Festival. During the pandemic, they explored new mediums shaping their performance into video performance streamed online. In 2021, they produced (now) “Jalinan Kusam di Lemari Sosi '', an experiment on actor and puppet relations. Additionally, we are committed to facilitating workshops on theater objects, puppetry, and acting, as well as fostering collaborations with diverse multidisciplinary art forms and backgrounds.
