About the Performance

Jala lan Jana offers a warm yet thought-provoking sensory journey, quietly asking: Who moves whom? And who, in the end, is being moved?

Jala lan Jana offers a warm yet thought-provoking sensory journey, quietly asking: Who moves whom? And who, in the end, is being moved?

Jala lan Jana is a visual performance rooted in the dialogue between object and body, presenting the river as a living entity which constantly evolving, shifting, and responding. Through fabrics, light, and an immersive soundscape, the stage gradually transforms into a moving stream that surrounds and interacts with the body within it. Without dialogue, the performance invites audiences of all ages to experience the delicate meeting between gentleness and subtle disturbance, between playfulness and the loss of balance. Materials transform into currents, creatures, and unstable surfaces, blurring the boundaries between performer and environment.

This year, Jala lan Jana will be presented in Kampung Budaya Piji Wetan, Kudus, Central Java followed by Workshop with Lumbung Baca on 18th July 2026. Then we present the works in Galeri Lorong, Yogyakarta.

“I love the show. It is amazingly crafty. Very organic material, heartbreaking, very deep soul searching concept.”

Process and Development

Jala lan Jana,
Throughout the Years

2018

Sori in the Land of Lembuna was the beginning of Jala lan Jana. It was a collaborative work with Gwen Knox for Pesta Boneka 2018. It narrates the tale of an unlikely friendship between a human and a river creature Lembuna - a bull headed snake - that lives in the river way before human existence.

2023

We transform Sori in the Land of Lembuna to Jala lan Jana the Everlasting Dance. It was presented during Southeast Asian Arts Forum 2023, NAFA, Singapore. Exploring the idea that humans are not the exclusive focus of existence. Recognizing the interdependence between humans and rivers within a larger, complex ecological network. Pemali River has agency and contributes to owning its flow, patterns and dynamics

2026

Jala lan Jana now transform into a puppet performance that invites audiences in all ages to imagine and experience rivers through its creatures, streams, and stones.
